Terek on the march again

Remember how back in May I told you about Terek Grozny upsetting the odds to win the Russian football cup and qualify for the UEFA (European) Champions League? Well, their Champions League campaign has begun…

and they go into the second leg of their match against Polish side Lech Poznan with a well-deserved 1-0 lead, courtesy of a Dmitry Khomukha goal in the dying seconds of the game.

The ongoing violence in Chechnya means that Terek have to play all of their home games outside of the war-torn republic. Happily this match was played without trouble in Moscow’s Lokomotiv stadium under the watchful eyes of more than 1,600 Russian riot police.

Congratulations to Terek, and good luck for the second leg (this Wednesday?).

But a big boo to Eduard Nisenboim, a staff writer at uefa.com for the worst pun of the year so far… Star Terek’s final frontier
