About Murmansk

The city of Murmansk is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle, with a population of 336,137. The population is declining, however – it was over 450,000 in the dying days of the Soviet Union.

Murmansk is on the Kola Peninsula. Because it benefits from warm North Atlantic currents, it remains free of ice throughout the year, making it an important Russian port. Nearby Severomorsk is a Russian Navy base.

Despite its size, Murmansk is a relatively new city – it was founded in 1916, and originally called Romanov on the Murman. It has had a turbulent history however – it was occupied by Western forces during the Russian Civil War, and was one of the main links between the Soviet Union and its Allies during World War 2, and many shipping convoys, known as Arctic Convoys, went to Murmansk. It’s importance can be seen in the efforts that the German military went to in their, ultimately failed, attempt to capture the city.

It isn’t really recommended that you holiday in Murmansk – there are few tourist attractions. Instead, most people travel to Murmansk on business.
